Tramhaus are The Netherlands’ best-kept secret – a post-punk band from the (low) land that gave us Focus, Golden Earring and, er, Pussycat.
A friend of a friend from recommended the Rotterdam band the other day and I’ve finally got around to hearing them. I rather wish I’d done so six months ago because I like them – and they played one of my nearest venues, The Shacklewell Arms, in March.
While they have quite a generic post-punk sound – rumbling basslines, propulsive drumming, slashing guitars – there’s an appealing energy to the way Tramhaus do it.
The three men and two women are fronted by Lukas Jansen who has a powerful stage presence, enhanced by the fact that, like most Dutch men these days, he seems to be about seven feet tall.
I’m delighted to read that on their first UK tour they were shocked by the difference between the north and south of England, finding Blackpool “a glorious place” where “the uniformly skimpy clothing and party-hard attitudes in the face of the cold lash of the Irish Sea” made a big impression.
They’ve put out a bunch of singles over the past couple of years and this is their latest one, Beech. Not to be confused with Blackpool Beach.
