The Last Dinner Party – Nothing Matters

29th April 2023 · 2020s, 2023

The Last Dinner Party are the latest buzz band to fly out of the traps in 2023. And their single, Nothing Matters, is a banger.

Not gonna lie, the band name made me cringe. And the vintage cosplay element. And the cut-glass accent, perfectly enunciating every word of the lyric. Plus the inevitablity that it will be mere moments before someone calls them the “new Wet Leg.” I’m sure they already have.

But talent will out, and I’ve got to admit this is a great song, with a great video. That chorus is an earworm and a half, and what’s not to love about a posh convent girl* singing rude words?

So who are The Last Dinner Party?

Well, a year ago they were still The Dinner Party until they had to change their name due to a clash with a jazz supergroup involving Robert Glasper and Kamasi Washington.

They had been making their name the old-fashioned way, by playing loads of gigs before releasing any records, and putting lots of them on YouTube to build the buzz. But there’s a bit more to it than that.

They’ve also got a massive management team and top booking agent behind them, which may explain how they first came to attention in front of 50,000 people in Hyde Park last year, supporting some codgers old enough to be their grandads (great-grandads) called The Rolling Stones.

Anyway, they’ve taken their time and paid their dues and now their debut single is out and it’s called Nothing Matters which will remind you of Sparks and Kate Bush and Florence + The Machine and… well… Wet Leg.

Here’s the video. And you’ll be singing along by the end.

*I have no evidence that Abigail, the singer, went to a convent school. And I honestly don’t care where any of them went to school.
