Alogte Oho & His Sounds Of Joy – La Ka Ba’a

I love it when a group lives up to its name. And rarely, if ever, has a group lived up to its name as much as Alogte Oho & His Sounds Of Joy. It’s written all over their faces, it’s in every note they play and sing, and it’s in every sinuous groove their bodies make.

I came across this lot while driving home from visiting a very sick friend and it instantly cheered me up at a time of deep sadness. So much so that I had to stop the car and Shazam the sounds Gilles Peterson was playing.

That didn’t work because it was a studio session, and because, as Gilles explained, Alogte himself was not there because the UK’s always-welcoming immigration officers decided his paperwork was not properly in order, so the drummer had to fill in for his vocals.

So I had to look up Gilles’s 6Music playlist to find the band in question. And I’m so glad I did. Because here they are, introducing themselves before kicking up a storm.

Then I had to look up Alogte to find out that he’s “the number one Frafra gospel artist from within the explosive music scene of Bolgatanga in Northern Ghana.”

Their recently released second album, recorded deep in the rainforest of the Ashanti Kingdom, builds on their signature sound of a grooving West African rhythm with exuberant brass and flashing synth accents, over which the Sounds of Joy bring their vocal explosions.

And that, I am told, is the essence of Frafra Gospel.
