Here’s some banging techno: a self-styled “queer non-binary anthem” – More Femme, More Masc – straight out of New York City. Listen closely and you may discern the chords of Tracy Chapman’s Fast Car in there.
It’s by a Brooklyn-based producer called DJ Autopay and I’ve seen it described as a “house heater” which is a musical style I’ve never heard of before.
I can tell you that DJ Autopay’s real name is Russell E.L. Butler, that they define themselves as a “non-binary, queer black immigrant” – they grew up in Bermuda – and they used to be based in Oakland/San Francisco.
In fact, Butler narrowly escaped death in the tragic 2016 warehouse blaze in an artists’ collective known as the Ghost Ship fire in Oakland, in which 36 people, including some of his friends, lost their lives.
Butler began making experimental house music after studying music in Boston, though I’m interested to learn that their first musical experiences were with hip-hop and the extremes of the rock world – specifically doom, black and thrash metal.
I can also tell you that this comes from a new four-track EP called Bumpers, on T4T LUV NRG, a dance music label owned by two female producers, Eris Drew and Octo Octa.
