I should probably have posted this song on New Year’s Day; it’s the ultimate morning-after song. It’s also a bleak portrait of a couple trapped in an endless cycle of bitterness and despair.
One of Richard Thompson’s darkest songs (and that’s saying something), it’s not just about the booze, but about the desperation that led there – all the more poignant because we know that Richard and Linda had such a turbulent personal relationship.
Then again, it’s what fuelled many of the great songs on albums like their landmark debut I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight in 1974 and its comparatively neglected sequel, Hokey Pokey.
The lyrics speak for themselves:
“I’ll regret it all in the morning
When I see your smiling face
I’d rather be in any place but here
Now the room is spinning fast
And it fades away at last
When this empty night is passed
I’ll regret it all in the morning”
