Superfly – Feel Like Makin’ Love

24th October 2025 · 2020s, 2023, Dance, Soul

Tom Misch’s jazzy house update on Roberta Flack’s 50-year-old chart topper Feel Like Makin’ Love is the kind of thing you might hear at a beach bar in Ibiza.

Misch is the latest in a long line of artists to tackle the song, originally written by Eugene McDaniels, following in the footsteps of Isaac Hayes, Lou Rawls, George Benson, Johnny Mathis, Gladys Knight, Roy Ayers and the late D’Angelo (to name but a few).

It’s from Misch’s first album under his Superfly alter ego: a house music side project from the jazz guitarist’s solo material, which includes an album for Blue Note with virtuoso jazz drummer Yussef Dayes.

Released in 2023, Happy Music is quite a departure: a collection of dance cuts with uplifting melodies and positive vibes, it’s an extension of his earlier experiments with house music, blending disco, funk, jazz, soul and classic samples.

Misch has previously collaborated with musicians including De La Soul, Loyle Carner and Michael Kiwanuka, making him a major figure in the UK’s current jazz, neo-soul and funk scene.

But he has always had one foot in electronic dance music, and incorporated those elements in his earlier solo material. Here they come to the fore.

With Supershy, the jazzy elements are stripped back and replaced with thumping house beats and funky disco basslines; the retro feel emphasised by the retro ‘Supershy’ logo of bold block letters in orange.

I don’t know if Roberta, who died earlier this year, ever heard this but I like to think she would have liked it too.
