I was not aware The Dandy Warhols had put out a covers album til I chanced upon this. And to be honest, I didn’t know it was them when I heard it.
Because it sounds nothing like the band who first caught my attention with Not If You Were The Last Junkie On Earth, Get Off and Bohemian Like You.
Then again, that was nearly 30 years ago and I haven’t closely followed their career.
The last time I saw them was supporting Bowie some 25 years ago, when they adopted a radically avant-garde approach to reinterpreting their own songs.
So much so that I remember the guy next to me at their 2002 Meltdown performance askingme if I knew who the band onstage were because he thought the support act was the Dandy Warhols.
I don’t think he believed me when I assured him it was them.
Anyway I have occasionally dropped in on their albums since then, with varied reactions, but I missed their amusingly titled covers collection Pin Ups earlier this year.
It’s a curate’s egg, with some awful ones and some great ones and, as usual with these things, you’d enjoy listening to it once and then putting it on a shelf til it gathers dust.
Si if you want to hear them covering The Clash and The Damned, The Beatles and Bob Dylan, The Cure and The Gang Of Four, among others, check it out
This, the opening track, radically reorganises Cherry Bomb, the debut single of punky girl group The Runaways from 1976.
The song sounds mangled, with Courtney Taylor-Taylor’s vocals coming across more like Marilyn Manson, and the guitars sounding as if they’ve been played through a food processor. There’s even a theremin wobbling away.
