BDQ ft. Brian Auger & Lydia Sharpe – Wasn’t It You?

16th December 2023 · 2020s, 2023, Music, Soul

Brian Auger is a name that rings a distant bell to me but ought to ring a lot louder. He’s a bit of a zelig, turning up with his Hammond organ in the unlikeliest places ever since the ’60s. Not just his organ either.

That’s Auger playing the harpsichord that opens up For Your Love by The Yardbirds – all the more remarkable because he’d never touched one until he arrived at the studio in 1965 and asked where the organ was.

That was him playing his trademark organ on Dylan’s song This Wheel’s On Fire by Julie Driscoll, Brian Auger and The Trinity; he was in a group called Steampacket with Rod Stewart and Long John Baldry; he even appeared in a TV special with The Monkees before forming the jazz fusion group Oblivion.

Equally adept at soul, jazz and R&B, in a career that began almost 60 years ago he’s worked with Rod Stewart, Jimi Hendrix, Sonny Boy Williamson, Maria Muldaur, Eric Burdon and John McLaughlin.

He’s still going strong at the age of 84 and this cover of a 1968 tune by The Action was recorded earlier this year with the outstanding Lydia Sharpe recapturing the spirit of The Trinity with Julie Driscoll.

Released by the BDQ label – home of the soul specialist record shop in Soho – it features their house band of Neil Corcoran, Bryn Barklam and Alistair Martin alongside the veteran organist.
