Blur – The Narcissist

I never much liked Blur. In the Britpop wars I was Team Oasis. I still am, at least where their first album is concerned.

I always felt there was an air of sneering condescension about the way Damon Albarn mocked his rivals, that his disdain reflected an air of superiority over Oasis for being northern and working-class.
Mostly though, I just didn’t like the music.

Parklife, Song 2 and Girls & Boys all give me the horrors and Country House – the song that went head to head against Roll With It at the height of the Britpop wars – always seemed like a Carry On film in song (and video).

When the Evening Standard wanted to ramp up the rivalry by getting Zoe Williams and me to write a piece each, she chose Blur while I picked Oasis.

But if I set prejudice aside and look back 28 years later, there are moments I like. Tender, for example, is a lovely song.

And now, while the Gallaghers, both making forgettable Oasis-lite music for diehard fans, continue to bicker and vow never to get back together, Blur are reunited.

They have a new album with the instantly annoying and most Albarnian album title of all time, The Ballad Of Darren – a perfect blend of cultured polymath and Mockney everyman.

This is the first track, and it’s got an equally Albarnian title oozing with mock self-deprecation: The Narcissist. I quite like it (apart from his weird pronunciation of “pierrot” as “peer-oh”).

It’s not particularly memorable but I bet it’s miles better than an Oasis comeback single would be.
