Devon Ross – Killer

11th December 2023 · 2020s, 2023, Music

Devon Ross is an American multi-hyphenate: model turned actor turned musician – not just an MTA but an ATM.

I came across her music when Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth talked her up on the radio and played this track. He said she gave him a demo tape at a screening of Irma Vep, the TV miniseries she appears in – and for which Sonic Youth provided some music.

He said ot blew him away so much that he’s releasing her debut single on his own Ecstatic Peace label. Listening to this I can see and hear just why.

I love its louche lazy swing, her slashing guitar, her lugubrious vocals and, yes, the obvious influence of Sonic Youth as well as older artists from Patti Smith to The Stooges.

Ross is the daughter of Lenny Kravitz’s guitarist Craig Ross and a model called Anna Bauer and was a successful model herself – Vogue called her “the coolest model on the scene” in 2021 – when she was cast in Irma Vep.

It was her acting debut and she won plaudits, and plenty of attention, playing movie star Alicia Vikander’s nerdy film-fan assistant Regina.

Since then Ross has moved from LA to Notting Hill where she now lives with her boyfriend, Nick Cave’s son Earl. And if I can find a ticket for Wednesday’s sold-out show, I’ll be there.
