Isabella Lovestory – Fuetazo

Isabella Lovestory is a trailblazing new reggaeton star from Honduras, via Canada, and this is her self-styled “bad bitch anthem” called Fuetazo.

A lot of people my age like to moan about the rubbish music in the charts these days. And they may well be right.

As someone who doesn’t know their Dua Lipa from their Rita Ora, I neither know nor care what’s in the singles charts these days. But I do sometimes wonder what people listen to in other faraway lands, especially the ones where English is not the dominant language.

So I bring you Isabella Lovestory, the trailblazing new reggaeton star from Honduras, with a self-styled “bad bitch anthem” called Fuetazo.

It’s a collaboration, as most pop singles seem to be, with a Puerto Rican rapper and fellow “latinx LGBTQ+ icon” called Villano Antillano, and it’s an example of Isabella’s fusion of trap and reggaeton called “perreo-pop.”

Perreo, a word I don’t remember learning when I did O-level Spanish, apparently means twerking, which gives you the general idea of the video, but looks can be deceiving and Ms Lovestory goes deeper than that.

She says the video is actually a satire on the sexism of much machismo-drenched Latin music and that it has “themes of self-expression and women’s empowerment” – hence her bikini-wearing knife-wielding, presumably.

In fact her Lovestory character is as much a fabrication as Madonna (or Bowie) who deliberately embraces her own sexual objectification. “Mocking men is fun,” she says. “Mocking what society views as degrading to women is fun, because nobody gets to decide what a woman’s true desires are.”

Very true.

Senorita Lovestory was born Isabella Rodriguez in Teguciculpa, Honduras, the daughter of a radio DJ, and the family moved north to the US when she was 13. She is now based even further north, in Montreal, where she briefly attended art school before turning to music, recording her earliest efforts “for her cat” (it says here).

It also says her debut album, Amor Hardcore, was produced by a man called Chicken.
