Country veteran Rodney Crowell teams up with Jeff Tweedy of Wilco on a collaborative album called The Chicago Sessions.

I saw Rodney Crowell a few times in the 1980s, when he was married to Rosanne Cash, but rather lost touch with him over the years since then.

Thankfully he’s still going strong at the age of 72 and has just teamed up with Jeff Tweedy of Wilco on an album called simply The Chicago Sessions.

Like so many veterans of the folk and country world – Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard and the more-prolific-than-ever 90-year-old Willie Nelson – the passage of time lends a world-weary patina of age and a depth of character to Rodney’s vocals.

Yet it’s Tweedy’s weary vocals that exhibit the husky patina of age on these songs, especially this one.

There’s also a lovely cover of No Place To Fall, probably my favourite song by the late great Townes Van Zandt.
