The Hives – Bogus Operandi

Here are The Hives again, returning to the fray in their forties with a new song that shows they’ve lost none of their spark after 26 years together.

It’s got a great title – Bogus Operandi – and a great guitar riff that makes you nod your head even when you’re sitting down, and a great chorus you can yell along to.

Most of all, it’s got great energy. And some great throwaway lyrics: “My personality’s rotten all the way,” howls sings Pelle Almqvist. “Stand to the side when my shit starts wrecking.”

There’s a nice sense of self-deprecating humour about the video too, inspired by horror films of the kind set in a remote cabin in the woods, with a narrative around the fictional death of their fictitious sixth member, Randy Fitzsimmons.

We first find the boys – well, middle-aged men now – in sensible sweaters (still conforming to their black-and-white theme but rather more white than black in the houndstooth pattern) in a snowy Scandi landscape.

After a certain amount of blood spatter (and a flying spade) we finally find the band, now white-eyed zombies, reunited with their stage costumes – the old black-and-white suits updated with a zany zig-zag pattern – and their instruments… just in time for a grand finale.

Anyway, it’s great. And when they tour with the Arctic Monkeys this summer there’s a danger they might blow the headliners offstage.
