The Veils – No Limit Of Stars

I’m not sure what to make of The Veils. On the one hand they sound like a lot of stuff I love. On this track that stuff is The Bad Seeds.

Front man Finn Andrews channels Nick Cave’s vocal phrasing and florid lyrical style so closely that it’s almost a pastiche. They even come from the Antipodes – though in this case it’s New Zealand.

Born in London and raised in Auckland, Andrews’ musical pedigree is impeccable, as the son of XTC and Shriekback’s Barry Andrews (who also played with Bowie and Iggy).

His own musical journey began on the folk scene of Auckland, where he began writing songs, and at 16 he returned to London to form The Veils, and signed a deal with Rough Trade Records.

Their debut album, produced by Bernard Butler, came out in 2004, and introduced Andrews as an idiosyncratic singer with an impassioned vocal style in the vein of Jeff Buckley.

Their next album, Nux Vomica, made in Los Angeles with Nick Cave’s producer Nick Launey, introduced a darker sound to the band, and the widescreen possibilities of their music was discovered by film makers David Lynch and Tim Burton.

Andrews went on to appear in Twin Peaks: The Return, performing the song Axolotl in The Roadhouse nightclub.

This track, No Limit Of Stars, is taken from their 2023 album …And Out Of The Void Came Love. See less
