As Russia invades Ukraine, here’s a message for all the world, conveyed in the lockdown video shot at home by Sharon Van Etten and Josh Homme.

Filmed first as an expression of the stresses we all felt during the pandemic, this video finds a new lease of life as the world once again stands on the brink of a global threat.

This time it’s war, not disease, but the message is as clear as it has always been since Nick Lowe wrote the song for British pub rockers Brinsley Schwarz to perform in 1974.

Elvis Costello recorded it afterwards and it became even more popular when another version by Curtis Stigers appeared on The Bodyguard soundtrack, which sold 17 million copies.

It was also sung by Bill Murray at a karake ovening in the film Lost In Translation, and by many others. But this melancholy country version, released when America was in lockdown, is arguably the most affecting. 

“We wanted to share something personal and universal. That we are all in this time together”, wrote Van Etten, who is seen performing in her garden as her child plays in the background.

Josh Homme performed his part while sitting on a staircase and later in one of his house’s bedrooms, with his children making several surprise appearances.

The visuals of the video were created by Matthew Daniel Siskin “via iMessage + telephone”, with co-directing duties coming from “all the kids”.
